Your CCTV Is On—But Is It Recording?

Five checks facilities teams can make before an incident exposes a recording problem.

A monitor can show live camera images while the recorder has stopped saving usable footage. Regular verification closes that dangerous gap.

1. Test playback—not only live view

Select several cameras and retrieve footage from different days and times. Confirm the video loads, the time is correct and the image is usable.

2. Check storage health

A failing HDD, incorrect overwrite setting or insufficient capacity can reduce retention or stop recording entirely.

3. Review every channel

One healthy camera does not represent the whole system. Offline, intermittent and blurred channels should be identified individually.

4. Verify night performance

A camera that looks clear in daylight may produce glare, darkness or unusable detail at night.

5. Record the findings

Use consistent Operational, Attention Required and Critical statuses so the next action is clear.
